Arte contemporanea

Our approach to maintenance and conservation.

From the post-war period onwards contemporary art has shown a gradual shift in the use of new materials and technologies. This has created new challenges for the work of the conservator.

The restorer has to take into account many variables when preserving an art work. These range from knowledge of the materials used, how they interact with other materials, the perishable nature of certain materials (used intentionally by some artists), maintenance of mechanical and digital components, and documentation and storage of temporary and mixed media works such as installations.

Thus the conservator has to maintain the concept of fragility of the art works whilst preventing degradation.

The maintenance and monitoring of the state of conservation of the works are a fundamental part of our work and we avoid restoration, particularly in the case of contemporary art, which may involve invasive procedures that could destroy the delicate compositional balance created by the artist.
